Mastering a Steep Descent on your Bike

The sort of descent with the bike we're talking about is the kind that's so steep, there's little chance of changing your mind half way down and climbing off. Once you're rolling it's the beginning of the end. So, work out the best line beforehand and try to avoid areas of loose terrain which will be hard to brake on and could cause a front wheel wash out. Get your weight over the back of the saddle and off you go.On the way down make sure most of your braking is confines to the rear wheel – only feather the front to scrub off excess speed. Keep the weight well back off the saddle and over the back wheel to avoid going over the handlebars. However, you must also be prepared to shift your balance. In the case of this kind of straight, chute-like descent, keep the pedals level and out of trouble.
Approaching the bottom of the descent you can begin to bring your weight forward and more central over the bike. By regaining you natural riding position for level terrain you can make a speedier getaway from the drop. Easing off the brakes allows gravity to take over a bit, if you're set-up on your exit line.
