Mastering a Steep Descent on your Bike

Cycling TechniquesThe sort of descent with the bike we're talking about is the kind that's so steep, there's little chance of changing your mind half way down and climbing off. Once you're rolling it's the beginning of the end. So, work out the best line beforehand and try to avoid areas of loose terrain which will be hard to brake on and could cause a front wheel wash out. Get your weight over the back of the saddle and off you go.

On the way down make sure most of your braking is confines to the rear wheel – only feather the front to scrub off excess speed. Keep the weight well back off the saddle and over the back wheel to avoid going over the handlebars. However, you must also be prepared to shift your balance. In the case of this kind of straight, chute-like descent, keep the pedals level and out of trouble.

Approaching the bottom of the descent you can begin to bring your weight forward and more central over the bike. By regaining you natural riding position for level terrain you can make a speedier getaway from the drop. Easing off the brakes allows gravity to take over a bit, if you're set-up on your exit line.

How not to do a Decent with your bike

Not getting the weight far enough off the back of the saddle, the rear wheel starts lifting and it's all over. Overuse of the front brake can cause a front skid, a wheel twist and a nasty off. Just keep tabs on your speed. And remember – unless you're a wannabe champion no way you're going to pedal down something this steep
